It is customary for the author of a web page to place contact information on the page, and this information usually includes the e-mail address of the contact person or organization. If the HTML mailto tag is used to create a link to the e-mail address, the visitor's e-mail program will automatically be started when the e-mail link is clicked. For example, suppose Mary Smith puts her e-mail address on a web page. The link to her address would be created with the following code.

mailto:msmith@abcxyz.org

Because older browsers do not recognize the mailto tag, Mary would make her e-mail address visible on the screen as well as being specified by the mailto attribute.

CAUTION: Putting ones email address in web pages is a fast and guaranteed way to receive lots of spam. A safer way is to get a free email account from yahoo or hotmail or  and use that address in your web pages. If you start getting spam to that address, you can replace it with a new free address. In addition, use a different free address for your online purchases. Only give your real email address to persons you trust!
